Change Is Scary

Let’s be honest. Change is scary. Change is that guy in high school with a bunch of tattoos who challenges all the rules. He says what he thinks despite what anyone says. He’s not part of the popular crowd nor is he uncool. He just does his own thing. You know Change is legit, but you’re afraid to hang out with him. Anytime you chat with him, you’re enthralled by what he says but you walk away unnerved. You’re drawn to Change, but you don’t want to get too close. You’re afraid that if you chill with Change too much, he might take you off the well-beaten path and down an unknown trail that leads to who knows where.

So you’ve kept Change at arm’s length your entire life. Or have you? What if I told you that Change and you have been butt buddies this whole time?

When your hair grows, you’re hanging out with Change. You’re not aware because it’s unremarkable when it happens. You don’t notice until your hair gets too long. Change has been with you in the weeks or months that pass between your haircuts. But you only acknowledge him when it’s convenient — or inconvenient — for you.

Take a moment and think about who you were ten years ago. Where were you? How did you look at the world? What did you believe in?

Now think about who you are today. Where are you? How do you look at the world? What do you believe in?

You are probably a different person than you were ten years ago. If you’re happy with how you’ve turned out, you can thank Change! You guys have been hanging out a lot, and he has had a significant influence on who you are today. If you’re not happy with the last decade, perhaps you’d benefit by spending more time with Change!

It can be easy to be afraid of Change, especially when he’s about to take you down another unbeaten path where you have no idea where you’re going to end up. But let’s not forget about all the good times Change has given us. He may have persuaded you to work out often so that you can feel good about yourself. Perhaps Change convinced you to leave that job you hated to pursue the career that you love. Or maybe he pushed you out of your comfort zone to introduce you to your future husband or wife.

For all you know, the next adventure Change takes you on could be the greatest adventure of your life.
