morning pages

Morning pages combine writing, therapy, and mindfulness. It’s an idea introduced by Julia Cameron in “The Artist’s Way”.

Write three pages every morning. Stream of consciousness writing. Don’t think, just write.

Getting started is the hardest part. If three pages seem too much, start with one page. If one page seems too much, start with one paragraph. If one paragraph seems too much, start with one sentence. If one sentence seems too much, start with one word.

Just put down a word at a time. It doesn’t matter what the word is. It doesn’t matter if you’re using proper grammar. It doesn’t matter if you’re spelling is correct. It doesn’t matter if what you’re writing makes sense. Just put down a word at a time.

The process of writing morning pages enables us to connect our conscious minds with our Jungian shadow. We shine the light of our awareness on the darkness within us. We release our fear and let go of our past.

“I think they should be called ‘mourning’ pages because they are really a farewell to life as you knew it and an introduction to life as it’s going to be.”
— Julia Cameron
